Missile Patch Gallery Entry
Patches are displayed in albums by system and by specific locations like Vandenberg,
Patrick and other bases involved in multiple programs.  Go directly to an album by clicking

For those unfamiliar with on-line photo albums, note that there are  navigation arrows at the

Atlas ICBM - deployed in three versions,   Atlas D - 549 SMS, Offutt AFB, NE, 564 SMS and
565 SMS, in the 706/389 SMW, Warren AFB, WY and 576 SMS, the operational, training and test
unit, which also had Atlas E and F sites, at  Vandenberg AFB, CA 
Atlas E - 548 SMS, Forbes AFB, KS, 549 SMS, 566 SMS, Warren AFB, WY and 567
SMS, Fairchild AFB, WA. 
Atlas F - 550 SMS, Schilling AFB, KS, 551 SMS, Lincoln AFB, NE, 556 SMS, Plattsburgh AFB, NY,
577 SMS, Altus AFB, OK, 578 SMS, Dyess AFB, TX and 579 SMS, Walker AFB, NM
 
BOMARC - deployed at bases in the northeast and northern US, 6 ADMS, Suffolk County AFB, 
NY, 22 ADMS , Langley AFB, VA, 26 ADMS, Otis AFB, MA, 30 ADMS, Dow AFB, ME, 35 
ADMS,  Niagara Falls MAP, NY, 37 ADMS, Kincheloe AFB, MI, 46 ADMS, McGuire AFB, NJ,
74 ADMS, Duluth IAP, MN, and by the RCAF at two locations in Canada.  The 4751 ADW (M) at
Hurlburt Field, FL was the development, test and training unit. Note that testing was also done
 at Patrick for BOMARC, as well as several other systems.
 
Competitions - The annual Space and Missile Competition began as Curtain Raiser, the SAC      
Missilc Combat Compeition, in 1967 and Olympic Arena in 1969.   In 1994, it became Guardian
Challenge, the Air Force Space Command's Space and Missile Compeition.   Exercises  include
programs not part of the competition like Olympic Flag, Guardian Sword, etc.

GLCM - deployed at six bases in England (501 TMW and 303 TMW), Sicily (487 TMW), Belgium (485 TMW), Germany (38 TMW) and the Netherlands (486 TMW) from 1983 to 1991, the BGM-109 ground launched cruise missile was initially given the same name as the Navy version on which it was based, the Tomahawk, but the Air Force later selected Gryphon as its name.  The missile was tested at Dugway, Utah and training was conducted at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona.    


Jupiter and Thor IRBMs - deployed in Italy and Turkey (Jupiter) and England (Thor).  There was a Jupiter unit for a short time at Huntsville, AL and Thor units at Vandenberg.  All of these patches are on the Jupiter/Thor page.

Matador and Mace - these early cruise missiles were deployed in Germany, Korea, Okinawa and Taiwan between 1954 and 1969.

Peacekeeper - deployed in the 90 SW at Warren from 1986 to 2005.  The Peacekeeper page also includes patches from the development and test programs. 

Small ICBM - a development program for a small, mobile missile conducted from 1986 to 1992

Snark  - deployed at Presque Isle AFB, ME.

Titan I ICBM - deployed in the 395 SMS, the training and test unit at Vandenberg, 451 SMW, Lowry AFB, CO, 568 SMS, Larson AFB, WA, 569 SMS, Mt Home AFB, ID, 850 SMS, Ellsworth AFB, SD and 851 SMS, Beale AFB, CA.

Titan II ICBM - deployed in the 308 SMW, Little Rock AFB, AR, 381 SMW, McConnell AFB, KS and 390 SMW, Davis Monthan AFB, AZ, with sites also in the 395SMS, the training and test unit at Vandenberg. 

 ALCS - the Airborne Launch Control System, aircraft used for launch of Minuteman and Peacekeeper missiles if launch control facilities under ground are unable to conduct launch

Airlaunched Missiles - From the early Rascal and Genie to Hound Dog to the ALCM, ACM and SRAM, this collection reflects the units involved with developing, testing, deploying and maintaining airlaunched missiles.

Alert, Dispatches and Missions - These patches represent milestones in the number of alert tours, maintenance dispatches, airborne launch control missions or other related activity.  Some were wing or squadron unique.

Helicopters - Helicopters have been involved with missile support from the earliest days   

Other Bases - Patches from other bases involved in the development, testing, training or support of missiles

Major Commands, Numbered Air Forces, Divisions and Host Wings - Organizations with subordinate missile or missile related units

Organizations involved with missile training - Centers and units that train missileers other than Vandenberg

Missile, Support and Headquarters Unit Designations - Missiles have been deployed in flights, squadrons, groups and wings, with headquarters levels at division, numbered air force and major commands.  Flights were common both in Minuteman and GLCM. Some missile training units used MS instead of MTS.    44MIMS used MMS in error.  MIS or MLS was used by some missile squadrons briefly.
Wing staff functions in operations have been designated by symbols - DOT, DOV, D09, D022, D024, etc. and as part of the OG/OSS - OGV, OSKC, etc.
