The Space and Missile Competition began as the Missile Combat Competition in 1967, called Curtain Raiser, was not held in 1968, and was called Olympic Arena from 1969 through 1981. For 1982 through 1985 it was only called the SAC Missile Combat Competition, with Olympic Arena returning for 1986 and 1988 through 1993. For 1987, the comp was called Olympic Shield. It was a SAC event from 1967 through 1992, and an Air Combat Command event for 1993. In 1994, when Air Force Space Command became the host, the event became the Space and Missile Competition and is called Guardian Challenge. It was not held in 2003 and 2005 but patches were produced.
